Toronto, February 16th, 2023, Yorkgate Mall will host its annual March Break activities designed to educate and entertain kids, teens and adults. All events are FREE and will take place near Tim Hortons.

Sesame Street’s, Cookie Monster and Elmo Meet & Greet with Cookie Crafts!

Monday, March 13 from 1pm – 4pm

Meet the educational characters from Sesame Street and learn how to decorate your very own cookie.

1st Annual Yorkgate Mall Comic Con

Tuesday, March 14 from 10am – 6pm

Over 10 vendors sharing their passion for comics, collectibles, toys and special superhero character appearances. Making it the largest Comic Con in North York.

Discover The World of Exotic Animals!

Wednesday, March 15 • 1pm & 2pm

Get up close and learn about exotic animals during this exciting interactive show!

Sing your Heart Out During Our Singing Competition – March Break Idol!

Open Auditions: Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17 from 1pm – 3pm

Finals: Saturday, March 18 from 1pm – 4pm

“This event is a great opportunity for families to come out and get involved in some fun FREE activities” remarks Chris Couch, Marketing Associate at Yorkgate Mall. “We hope to help provide an exciting educational and entertaining experience for our customers.”

As well as this full slate of activities, Yorkgate Mall will kick off a March Break Book Drive on Monday, March 13 ‘til March 17. Customers are encouraged to donate a new or slightly used youth or children’s book and help support literacy programs in the community.

Yorkgate Mall, located at Jane and Finch in Toronto, Ontario, offers over 60 stores and services under one roof including No Frills, LCBO, IDA Drug Mart and Toronto Public Library.

Grassroots artists, activists and scholars are bringing the Black Creek to life with dance, artistry, and education

A troupe of Kathakas rehearse their choreography and figure out placement nestled among the trees, in the heart of the Black Creek.

When Ayesha Khan visited a Lost Rivers walk along the Mimico Creek watershed in Etobicoke, she immediately thought of her home in the Black Creek.

"This is such a lovely concept; the hidden stories of bodies of water." she mused. "I just thought; why can't we do this in Jane and Finch?"

She pitched her idea to Brian McLean of Lost Rivers TO and together, they began forming the Black Creek Walks, Talks and Dances project; a set of educational teachings and art walks along the Black Creek in Downsview.

For the last 18 months of his life, Jeremiah Ranger never went to school.

Not one day.

That sounds shocking, I know. But the reality is that this meant he was only in school slightly less than previous years due to his frequent suspensions. He would be suspended for 20 days, return to school for a short time and then get suspended for another 20 days. It was a consistent case of educational whiplash.

Amidst the ever-growing list of civic and social justice issues slowly being brought to light in our world today, one especially prevalent problem remains hidden in the dark; period poverty. Period poverty refers to the inaccessibility of period products, waste management, basic sanitation such as toilets, proper disposals and soap, as well as lack of education regarding menstruation. Period poverty exists across the globe and impacts millions of people every waking minute. Even right here in Canada, 1 in 4 women have to choose between buying period products or buying food - a choice that absolutely no one should have to make.

November 20, 2015. You may remember that day because it was an eventful day in world news. Ten gunmen with grenades stormed a five-star Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, Mali. They took 170 hostages. 27 people were killed.

News on that day was less tragic back home in Toronto. On that day, the Toronto Christmas Market officially opened for the season in the Distillery District. For the first time, they would charge an admission fee on weekends to help reduce the size of the crowds.

The difficult cases are the ones that need us the most. Jeremiah Ranger was a difficult case. I remember reading these words at his funeral, written by his Child Youth Worker from Oakdale Park Middle School: “Jeremiah was adorable and shy. He had eyes that showed pain and hope at the same time…He was kind, loving, fragile, protective, and family oriented…Through his anxiety was a loving boy.” Most of those who knew him the best would say the same thing. He had a big heart and a big smile. But he also had a darker side. Jeremiah Ranger was a difficult case.
