Social distancing on Mother’s Day may mean you can’t take your mom to a restaurant or a farmer’s market for an outing, but it doesn’t mean you can’t shower her with love. More time at home means more time to make crafts. Here are two fun ideas you can make with a few household items and a little bit of time to help the moms in your life prioritize self care during this difficult time.
DIY Crayon Candles
A great way to show mom you care about her is this soothing DIY item. Whether she’s taking a bath or winding down for the night, every time she lights it up she’ll remember how much her family loves her. It’s also a great way to get rid of old crayon pieces that are too small to use anymore!
What you’ll need:
Non-toxic coloured crayon pieces. (You can use multiple colours if you’d like!)
Paraffin wax (You can use tealights.)
A saucepan/pot and smaller jar or, alternatively, a microwaveable bowl
A mason jar/small glass cup
A wick
Essential oils (Optional, but they’ll make your candle smell great.)
Place the wick at the bottom of the jar and make sure it’s long enough to reach above the rim.
Peel your crayons and choose your first colour.
Use about 2/3 paraffin and 1/3 crayon. (Crayon doesn’t burn well on its own!)
Heat up your wax and stir. Do this either by using a double boiler method (heating water in the pot and using a smaller jar inside with the wax) or in the microwave.
When the wax is soft and melted, mix in a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Peppermint and lavender are very relaxing!
Pour in your first colour and wait for it to harden. Use a pair of skewers on the top to hold the wick in place while the wax dries.
Once that layer is dry, repeat with your second colour.
Keep doing this until you’ve filled your jar with a pretty, striped candle.
Trim your wick until it’s about a quarter inch above the wax.
You’re all set! If you want to go the extra mile, make her a personalized card telling her how much you love her and attach it with a hole puncher and a ribbon.
DIY Custom Lip Balm
What you’ll need:
Small empty jar or container
Petroleum jelly
Liquid food flavouring (Vanilla, chocolate or anything you have around!)
A bit of an old lipstick (Optional.)
Cosmetic sparkles (Optional.)
Mash a dollop of petroleum jelly up with the lipstick and sparkles in a small bowl or container.
Add in a few drops of your flavour and mix well.
Fill the tin with your new lip balm.
To make your gift extra special, make a customized label for your lip balm telling your mom how much you care about her!
With everyone spending more time at home, now is a great time to connect with kids and get busy with arts and crafts. Get creative and show the mom in your life how much she means to you with these personalized DIY gift ideas.
