With 40 seats at Queen’s Park, only the ONDP can get change in this election.
In light of the current provincial election, the Downsview Advocate endorses Tom Rakocevic for re-election. Born and raised in the area, growing up as a tenant in the riding and now as a homeowner, Mr. Rakocevic understands the needs of the families in Humber River - Black Creek. Having attended school in the riding from elementary all the way to university and having lived his entire life in the riding gives him a perspective that none of the other major party candidates have. There is an inherent value to re-electing a candidate that shares the same postal code as you and I.
Mr. Rakocevic has moved a private member’s bill to remove postal code discrimination by insurance companies for car insurance (which the government defeated). He understands the local issues, because he is local and has remained so. As prices go up in supermarkets, he is shopping in the same places we are and is pushing to create a consumer protection body that would have real teeth to protect us from price gouging and unfair practices and collusion at the store.
Life in Ontario is unaffordable due to a series of governments that have taken the side of big corporate interests, instead of everyday families, seniors and children. Conservatives and Liberals alike, from Harris to Wynne, all had a chance to hire more nurses, enact real rent control, invest in housing, create a universal, affordable childcare system, make dental coverage more widely available, raise wages, make medicines more affordable and take real action on the environment. Instead, their priorities led to scandals like “E-Health” and the Gas Plant with the Liberals and Long-Term Care home deaths in the thousands and a billion-dollar give away to Highway 407’s provider by Ford.
With 40 seats in the Legislature, the Ontario NDP is only 10 seats away from pushing into minority territory and creating real change. We need to fix our healthcare, take care of our seniors, the environment and make changes that will create a better tomorrow for the next generation. Only Tom Rakocevic can do that here in Humber River Black Creek if re-elected.
