Humans are not the only ones impacted by COVID-19. Not only have some animals been infected with the virus themselves, but the worldwide shutdown has impacted some families’ abilities to care for their furry companions. One organization is working to change that.
Humane Society International is one of the leading animal welfare organizations worldwide, operating in over 50 countries. With their Canadian headquarters in Montreal, the team knew they had to act when lockdown restrictions were first put in place. Beginning with Montreal and eventually branching out to Toronto, the team has been delivering cat and dog food throughout the GTA since the beginning of April.
With the Toronto team starting off with just one member, eventually they branched out to 4 with additional volunteers. Larysa of the Toronto team speaks of silver linings.
“There’s an organic, common message that comes out of underserved communities with COVID-19, that people who need help finally have a way to receive it. It’s brought resources and an underbelly of positivity around giving.” She says of her daily deliveries.
The team makes deliveries to other organizations in the GTA as well, including Fred Victor and the People With Aids Foundation.
“There have been times in my life where my pets got me through tough days. There are people who often go without so that they can feed their pets. People were falling through the cracks.” Laments Larysa of the circumstances which make the program necessary. “I only hope that this is sustainable, that it goes beyond COVID.”
Her sentiments ring true for many Canadians. Pets are not just members of the family, but often valuable mental health supports for vulnerable communities, many of whom comprise the deliveries Larysa runs with her team.
Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light many deep vulnerabilities within contemporary human society, but one thing which has always and will always ring true is that there will always be folks who want to help.
