The fifteenth of May is internationally observed as the day of families! The purpose of this day is to promote awareness of issues related to families, acknowledge the value of family, and increase knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic processes affecting them. This article will cover the effects of technology and its advantages and disadvantages.
Since the start of the 2000s, technology has changed the way families interact and communicate with each other. On one hand, technology has made it easier for families to stay connected, even when they're far apart. Now, video chat and social media have made sharing pictures, videos, and updates in real-time infinitely easier. This has been especially vital during the pandemic when families were unable to see each other in person. On the other hand, technology can also create distance between family members. With smartphones and other devices, it's easy to get lost in our screens and forget (or not necessarily want) to spend quality time with our loved ones. With all these different apps and their multitude of features all vying for our attention (and data, of course), it has become even harder not to get engrossed in our little virtual bubble. This absorption is frequently a source of conflict within families, causing strain.
Despite these challenges, technology has the ability to strengthen families in many different ways. For example, online resources can help families learn new skills and connect with others who are going through similar experiences. It can also make it easier for families to access healthcare, education, and other services. Technology allows for communal media consumption (through streaming services) which allows families to enjoy a movie or show together, creating new and fun memories.
Services that can strengthen families include EarlyON Child and Family Centre, Jane Finch Centre, and Jane Finch Tennis!
EarlyOn: offers “free, high-quality programs for families and children from birth to 6 years old". Families can connect with other families with young children, and find support resources within the community. You can learn and play with your child, and get advice from professionals trained in early childhood (janefinchmall.ca).
Jane Finch Centre: offers programming to support the “social, recreational, mental health and wellbeing of seniors, adults and youth and residents of Jane and Finch in accessing mental health services/social supports” Their services are available for all members of the family (www.janefinchcentre.org).
Jane-Finch Tennis: Offer programming for children and youth ages 4-24. “Programs for adults, especially for parents whose children are enrolled in JFCTA programs are offered. Employment opportunities and professional development for older youth and young adults (ages 18-24) are also accessible.”
International Day of Families is an important reminder of the value of family in our lives. While technology can create challenges, it also has the potential to bring families closer together. By using technology in a mindful and intentional way, we can strengthen our relationships with our loved ones and build stronger families!
