All high school graduates had to deal with the disappointing and unfulfilling final year of high school. Almost all local schools chose to keep their graduations virtual, and none of the schools are hosting a prom. Fortunately, the students are coming up with creative ways to host their own prom–one way is throwing a backyard prom.
As Ontario is now in Stage 2 of the re-opening plan, individuals are allowed to host outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 25 people. Graduates are putting in their own money and work to give themselves the prom that they deserve.
Some graduates, including Downsview Advocate writer Charlene Jose, gathered together on the night of July 3rd for their prom. They set up the backyard perfectly to make the attendees feel as if it was a real prom. They set up a photo booth for pictures with friends and family and a dance floor that they used all night.
One of the attendees said, “Of course, I would’ve loved to have all my fellow graduates be able to celebrate prom together, but having a more intimate prom was pretty cool too. I knew everyone so I felt way more comfortable. I also loved that we were in charge of everything and that we got to make the decisions. The food and the setup were incredible. It was an amazing night and will remember it forever.”
It is great to see that although they are not in the most ideal situation, they are doing something and making the most of it.
