Mental health day, a day we raise awareness of mental health issues and a day that provides us all the opportunity to share our story and help the people around us. World Mental Health Day started for the first time on October 10, 1992. It was initially started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health by the Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter. Now, every year on October 10, we show respect and empathy to those who share their stories and those who suffer in silence. The main goal has always been to promote mental health and educate individuals on relevant mental health issues.
On October 10, check up on your loved ones and be open to what they tell you about their mental health. Sometimes, we all need someone to talk to and that can be you! Support them by comforting them and providing for them in any way you can. Not only should you check up on others' mental health but you should also check up on your own health. Be honest with yourself, how have you been? Why are you feeling this way? Are you happy with yourself? Understanding your own feelings will give you more clarity and will help you realize what you need to do in order to move forward.
In the Downsview community, several mental health resources are available. Some organizations include Generation Chosen, Jane-Finch Community & Family Centre, Black Creek Community Health Centre and more.
Don't forget, we all go through our own problems on a daily basis and you are never alone in this fight. Whether it's Mental Health Day or not, treat yourself, be kind to yourself and put yourself first.
