From November 25th to December 10th every year, Canadians recognize 16 days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The first day, November 25th is International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.
According to the United Nations (UN), 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence in their life (usually by their partner), 52% of women in marriages make their own decisions about sexual activities, and 71% of all human trafficking victims are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 are sexually exploited. These statistics are incredibly high and we need to raise awareness to stop the violence.
There are many different ways that you can help the fight against violence against women is by donating to any women’s shelter, and by also reporting anything you see. Some shelters include the North York Women’s Shelter (NYWS) which has various locations in Toronto and around the GTA. Another one is West and Midaynta Community Services on 1541 Jane St, as well as Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women on 2350 Finch Ave.
The Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women not only helps women but also the youth and seniors in our community. One of their programs is “Safe families in Safe Communities”, where they educate girls and women about gender-based violence. Another program that they offer is “Young Women’s Safety Network”, where they educate young girls about gender-based violence.
There are always resources available for anyone who is in need of support in the Downsview area. The fight against violence against women doesn’t end on November 25th, it continues until the violence comes to an end. Donating to shelters, asking for help are just a few ways that you can help stop violence against women.
