March is a season of transition and new opportunities. As we watched to see if our Groundhog Day predictions come true, we welcome the official start of spring—and for students, a much-needed break from the academic grind. With plenty of exciting plans ahead, let’s explore how we can make the most of the month!
Many local organizations are offering special student-focused programs. The Jane & Finch Boys and Girls Club is hosting a March Break Camp, packed with indoor and outdoor activities to keep kids active and engaged. Meanwhile, LiftED Education is running a March Break Math Literacy Camp from March 10 to 14, designed to boost youth confidence in numeracy. This free program will support students from partner schools, including Brookview M.S., Driftwood P.S., Firgrove P.S., Gosford P.S., and Shoreham P.S., through fun and interactive math activities.
Of course, students aren’t the only ones who can enjoy the season—there are plenty of great activities for families too! Yorkgate Mall will be hosting free March Break events, including a meet-and-greet with former NHL star Rick Vaive, an exotic animal show, a live wrestling show, a daily book drive, various mini-games, and a four-day comic con.
For those eager to embrace the warmer weather, Downsview Park has several outdoor programs throughout March. On March 9, the "Astronomy for All" event will feature discussions and potential sky-gazing with York University astronomers. For on-ground explorers, the free "Nature Play and Bonfire" event on March 10 offers a cozy way to connect with nature while enjoying toasty treats. Those with a sweet tooth can visit Black Creek Pioneer Village for "Maple Days" (March 10–14) to learn about Indigenous maple sugaring practices, complete with sampling and storytelling.
There’s no doubt that Humber River-Black Creek is bursting with ways to kick off spring on a high note—so let’s make the most of it!
