Celebrated in commemoration of the first revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad, Ramadan remains a sacred month for Muslims. Marked by fasting, increased prayer, and self-reflection, many embrace this joyous month as a time for spiritual growth, personal development, and, most importantly, devotion to God.
Typically, Muslim communities gather at sunset to partake in iftar, the breaking of the fast. Sharing iftar not only brings family and community members together but also encourages reflection and gratitude for their blessings. The communal aspect of iftar reinforces values of empathy, generosity, and compassion, fostering a strong sense of solidarity.
Within the Downsview community, many high schools host what is known as "Iftar Night." For students at Weston Collegiate Institute, Iftar Night is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural and religious traditions of Ramadan. These events provide a space to educate both Muslim and non-Muslim students about the significance of Ramadan and other important pillars of Islam. The evening features traditional foods, engaging activities, and prayer.
In previous years, this youth-led initiative has had the honor of hosting speakers such as Ahmed Adan and The Digital Sisterhood, who have shared their wisdom and insights. Given the significant Muslim population in the area, these initiatives can be deeply affirming for students. They offer a platform for young people to share a central aspect of their faith with their peers while also fostering inclusion and belonging within their community.
As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, Weston C.I. will once again be hosting Iftar Night on March 19. Tickets are available for $8. Now in its third consecutive year, Iftar Night 2024 promises to be a memorable evening filled with learning, sharing, and community spirit.
