As Northcrest Developments continues planning for the revitalization of the Downsview Airport Lands, their team continues to meet with residents and community partners to further refine their vision for the city’s next cultural hub.
Northcrest Developments is the lead developer for the Downsview Airport Lands after Bombardier announced its closing of operations by the end of 2023. In collaboration with the Canada Lands Company (CLC), these organizations are working to create a new secondary plan for the space. On August 30, Northcrest held an Open House for community members to gather and discuss the future of a section of the land known as the Hangar District.
They sought to engage with the community and continue to learn about the needs and priorities of residents. The event attracted a lively, engaged crowd of more than 50 community members throughout the evening, many of whom shared their interest and concerns.
Many were supportive of the plan’s new additions. These include new parks, senior centres, daycares, pedestrian-friendly streets, groceries, shops, cafes, and more. Community members are supportive of the addition to affordable housing and the creation of a community with resources within walking distance.
Their plans have a strong emphasis on maintaining and growing employment in the region and addressing challenges to ensure sustainability and equity. They aim to bring employers from new and emerging industries, such as the creative industries and tech, into the community. Residents expressed their need for clean, sustainable, innovative industries and employers in the space. Other concerns include traffic and high-rise neighborhoods.
Northcrest is committed to guiding the development of the lands with a long-term, forward-thinking approach. These plans will continue to be refined with other partners and stakeholders.
