Good morning, I'm a Toronto Grade 7 student in Mrs. Alcordo’s Class at Gulfstream PS. I'm going to talk about Truth and Reconciliation Day today. You might wonder, "What is Truth and Reconciliation Day?" It's a day to honour the Indigenous children who have passed, survivors of the residential school system, as well as their families and communities.

Today, youth in public schools are learning the relevance of student voice. That is, having the opportunity to view perspectives using different lenses about social justice issues, have dialogue, reflect and then think of ways to impact a larger audience to take action. Award winning teacher, Sheri Alcordo makes a point of providing learning opportunities for her students to be empowered and engage in cross curricular, culturally relevant and inclusive learning, in this case, letter writing, for an intentional purpose.

Sandra Anin was born and raised in the Jane and Finch area. She attended high school at James Cardinal McGuigan, and was actively involved with community arts in the Ghanaian community. As a young black woman, growing up in an area; that had a negative net cast around it, Sandra was exposed to a lot of adversaries and obstacles.

A local community cleanup took place at G Ross Park on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Over 35 people took part in this amazing community contribution and approximately 30 bags of garbage were collected from the creek and the surrounding parkland.

Whether you like horror, science fiction, or fact-filled encyclopedias, there’s no time like the present to get hooked on some good ol’ books! This year, Young Readers Week takes place from November 15th to the 19th. It is a time to recognize the importance of reading and serves as an opportunity to introduce young children to the joy of reading.

To the joy of many Black Food Justice activists and service providers in Ontario, the Toronto Black Food Sovereignty Plan has just been approved by Toronto City Council. The first of its kind in North America, the plan has been in development for 2 years by grassroots activists and city staff.

For 24 years, the All Nations International Development Agency (ANIDA) has been committed to making a difference in the Downsview community, and internationally. ANIDAs’ goal is to empower underprivileged communities by removing obstacles that prevent children from accessing education. ANIDA also provides resources needed for students to have a promising and fulfilling school year.

In March 2020, York University closed its doors for in-person learning and students had no choice but to shift to remote learning. It was an adjustment for all, and we had to overcome obstacles created by remote learning. However, as of September 2021, York University will be opening its doors for on-campus learning and students will now be able to return to their classrooms.

The City of Toronto Ward 7 Youth Council.
Youth in the Downsview Community now have access to an incredible opportunity that can amplify their voices.
Amid a pandemic, Amanpreet Chonkrian decided that there needed to be a platform for youth to voice their concerns related to their city. There needed to be a council for youth in our community, and Amanpreet turned that dream into a reality.
