Long-term care homes have been a focal point throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with caregivers at the center of it all. As we begin to explore the terrain of a post-pandemic society, it is more important than ever to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our caregivers on National Caregivers Day. In 2015, The Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies named every third Friday in February a day to celebrate the work of our caregivers. This year, National Caregiver Day falls on February 18.

Every year there are millions of cancer cases and cancer-related deaths that occur worldwide. Cancer is a deadly and often uncontrollable disease, so cancer patients require a lot of medical attention and care. However, cancer is a vast disease that affects the human body in a multitude of ways, which is why not all aspects of cancer are known.

A new 320 bed Long-Term Care home is coming to Downsview and is already under construction. However, most people are not aware of it as little consultation or outreach has been done about the project by the provincial government.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many women in Canada joined the annual nationwide breast cancer run, Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run. This year, the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run raised over $9 million for Canadians that have been impacted by breast cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) was founded in 1938, and has helped more than 55 million people since 2017.

World Mental Health Day

Mental health day, a day we raise awareness of mental health issues and a day that provides us all the opportunity to share our story and help the people around us. World Mental Health Day started for the first time on October 10, 1992. It was initially started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health by the Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter. Now, every year on October 10, we show respect and empathy to those who share their stories and those who suffer in silence. The main goal has always been to promote mental health and educate individuals on relevant mental health issues.

The Delta Variant is at least twice as contagious as previous strains.

As students go back to school in the fall many are worried about the delta variant, a variant that is twice as contagious as the previous strains. The delta variant is a highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus strain and what makes this virus strain more dangerous is how infectious it is and how fast it can spread. Data collected in countries with high case rates show that vaccinated people can carry as much virus in their nose as do unvaccinated people.
