Despite physical distancing orders that remain in place for the City of Toronto, continued overcrowding of particular transit routes make the option for keeping a safe distance apart nearly impossible. Routes 35 Jane and 36 Finch in particular remain over crowded during rush hour which is of serious concern for both drivers and commuters.

On Friday March 12 2021, community organization Remember the 400 joined forces with the Afri-Can Food Basket, Lumacare, ATU Local 113, the Jane Finch Centre and other partners to distribute 450 food hampers, called Freedom Baskets, as well as COVID-19 vaccine information in the Jane-Finch Community. Emergency food supports have been a vital supplement to the Jane-Finch community during the COVID-19 pandemic. While food insecurity was already a problem in the community before the pandemic, lockdown measures and job losses have greatly exacerbated this existing equity issue.

As the one year anniversary approaches in Ontario for the first COVID-19 related school shut down, it is hard to be hopeful about the effect that the pandemic has brought to everyday family life. It has been a very long year for parents and children, and trying to keep up with ever-changing demands has been tough. With significant numbers of parents keeping their kids at home to do online learning on the virtual stream, many are finding out just how difficult teaching can be.

A local cloud kitchen business in the Northwest corner of Toronto has partnered with various organizations and volunteers to deliver thousands of meals across the city of Toronto. “We are breaking a record of 10,000 meals delivered to hungry people in this city.” Said owner Steve of Kitchen24, known widely for his philanthropic habits and giveaway events.

In Humber River-Black Creek, one of Toronto’s worst-hit neighbourhoods, the Black Creek Community Health Centre mobilized to provide accessible testing options. A series of public pop-up testing clinics are available across Ward 7.

October is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Canada. However, children with autism need more than awareness and acceptance; they need access to various therapies in order to progress and function in a society that has not been designed for them. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy allowed my son to navigate the world around him. Many children with autism require individual need based therapy to reach their full potential.
